The Agriculture and Climate Coalition has come together to sponsor a bill introduced in February 2010 by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Yolo).
SB 1241, the Agriculture Climate Benefits Act, designates that a portion of funds generated from state or federal climate change programs support voluntary greenhouse gas emission reductions in California agriculture, while achieving environmental co-benefits. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), with input from an advisory committee made up of producers, researchers and nonprofit leaders, will administer the funds for research and demonstration, technical assistance and financial incentives for California farmers and ranchers to use agricultural practices, technologies and farming systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or sequester atmospheric carbon.
California agriculture is not only uniquely vulnerable when it comes to climate change - with drier conditions, more extreme weather events and rising temperatures - but California agriculture can also provide climate change solutions. Agriculture can reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency, renewable energy production and on-farm management practices. But resources are needed to make it possible for California's diverse agricultural industry use climate-friendly practices.
SB 1241 invests in California agriculture, our environment and our future.
